20 Things I've Learned from Cruise Ship Life... So Far

Posted on: Friday, March 30, 2012

1. Parts of me still don't know what to think about all of it

2. Sometimes you gotta just stand up and eat over the sink in the dish pit

3. You can get lit if you "take care" of the bartenders

4. Most people here do this to feed and support their families back home

5. Americans on the crew and staff side are rare

6. Learning here is similar to being dropped into the ocean without a life reserve and never having taken a swimming lesson

7. Apparently, cocaine is cheap in Curacao

8. Paper hats suck when you have thick hair

9. Surrounded by water, working 11 hours a day and I’m the thirstiest I’ve ever been

10. People have secret flings all the time

11. Inside the ship days of the week don't matter any more. I rarely know what day it is only if its a Sea Day or a Port Day.

12. That Italian captain from Costa Cruise Line really fucked things up for everyone else

13. Don't really know just how much free time I'll have... just whatever I could fit into my break

14. Everyone is always counting down to vacation

15. Dinner in the crew mess is usually me and a bunch of Filipino dudes

16. Nighttime = Freedom

17. Broken English is the official language in the kitchen

18. Taking it one day at a time never meant as much as it does now

19. Although beautiful... the ocean can seem like eternity

20. This is the most challenging shit I've ever done in my life... so far

  1. Wow,

props to you amiga. I've heard it can be pretty intense. It'll be a learning experience I'm sure. Like you said, one day at a time.

Take care of yourself, miss you.

  2. I feel you sister! ;). It will be something you will always remember. Not surprised at #10 at all! Is there a no fraternization clause or something?
